A few minutes later, another canoe appeared around the outcrop of the farthest rock pillar. Two men were paddling it, and behind them, hanging onto the back of the canoe, was a man. It was Tyler, being dragged through the water and looking very much the worse for wear.

“The current swept him out to sea,” one of the paddlers yelled. “Luckily we spotted him and were able to reach him in time.”

Tyler was reunited with his friends. Everyone clapped. A palpable wave of relief surged through the channel. We said our good-byes, and Peter ferried us back to the catamaran for an early dinner, after which we turned in.

But I couldn’t sleep. My mind was churning, a jumble of confused thoughts. In my head I relived the day’s emotional rollercoaster, over and over—the journey from pure joy in one moment, to abject helplessness and despair the next.

I drifted into morbid visions of what it would have been like if we’d found Tyler’s lifeless body on the rocks. I played out in my mind what I would have done and how I would have reacted. It occurred to me that in my sheltered life, I’d never actually seen a human corpse.

Something felt amiss. It was like I’d been sent a personal telegram courtesy of the universe, providence, God, or whoever the fuck was running the show. A brief missive designed to remind me that each moment in life was precious. Each minute of my existence was a jewel to be cherished, lest it evaporate without fanfare into nothingness.

Just like a wave might crash onto a shore, or like a solid wall might crumble into dust.
